Harris County was awarded a $500,000 federal Transportation Enhancement (TE) grant to construct a multi-use trail (walking/cycling) on the abandoned railroad right-of-way along SR 27 beginning at Chipley Street in Pine Mountain and extending 1.92 miles near the Callaway Gardens purchasing office. This project is a first phase of a Rails to Trails conversion project consisting of a ten-foot wide asphaltic concrete surface with a minimum of two foot shoulders on each side. Since the county acquired the entire 21.5 miles of abandoned railroad right-of-way, it is anticipated that the multi-use trail will be extended further south toward Hamilton as funding permits. Phase I is anticipated to be under construction during late 2017.
